Make Flower Pot Music--Guest Post

Happy Friday!  I have a special treat for you today.  Here is a guest post from education.com.  Their website "works with teachers and curriculum developers to create educational activities and other resources for kids".  Use the hyperlink above to see more on their site but here is a cute activity they are sharing with twochicksandamom!

Make Flower Pot Music

Turn flower pots into a musical instrument with this inventive activity! This craft will give him a great opportunity to learn about music and sound. The fun doesn't end with the creating, when this lovely flower pot creation sways in the wind your kid will be able to hear the lovely sounds his hanging instrument makes. He'll practice choosing color palettes, applying patterns and assembling a sound sculpture. Music can definitely come from some unexpected places, and this flower pot wind chime is a great way to teach your kid to listen to the music all around him.

What You Need:

  • 3 Terra cotta pots (1.5" tall, 2 2/3" tall and 3.5" tall)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Jute twine
  • Scissors
  • Approximately 6 old fishing weights (or more if you'd like)
  • Large wooden beads (large enough to string twine)
  • Cotton swabs
  • Toothpicks
What You Do:

  1. Help your child tie a large knot in the end of the twine and string it through the drainage hole of the smallest pot.
  2. Take the next smallest pot and string the twine through the drainage hole, tying a knot to secure the pot.
  3. Repeat this for the last pot, making sure they overlap to create a chime.
  4. Attach the fishing weights to either the pots themselves or the twine so that the weights will hit the inside of the pots when they gently sway in the breeze. You might have to do some experimenting here as it's going to be tricky figuring out how to get the fishing weights to hit the pots. If you used larger pots, you'll probably have to attach the weights to the underside of the pots as they won't sound when they sway in the breeze if they're attached to the twine.
  5. Finally, help him hang his pottery wind chime from a tree or pole outside and enjoy the beautiful sounds of the flowerpot wind chime!
Thanks for stopping by!

Kate's Dinosaur Garden--Easy Summer Fun

Hello and happy July 10th!  Not a holiday but it is summer!

Today I just have a quick post to share with you.  Several weeks in the summer and usually a week at Christmas break, our little granddaughter Kate spends some time with us due to her dad's work schedule.  She comes to stay with us for the week.  Kate is such a funny and sweet little girl and often has words of wisdom for us.  Just the other night, her tummy felt a bit off and so I was asking her questions, such as "What does your dad do when it feels like this?" or "Do you feel like you need to throw up?"  After a few of these questions, Kate said, "Grandma, you're a NURSE!  Think it out!"  LOL.  Gee, Grandma, quit being such a lame RN and grandparent.  We do get quite a kick out of her.

Last week when I picked her up I asked her if she would like to make a Fairy Garden.  I still had some supplies and a larger pot plus a couple of succulents.  She said "yes" and we stopped at a Dollar Tree on the way home (we live 2.5 hours away from Kate) and Kate saw a bag of dinosaurs and said, "Grandma, can I make a Dinosaur Garden instead?"  Of course I said she could so we bought a bag of $1 dinosaurs.  Actually, I like dinosaurs.  I used to play with little plastic ones my mom would buy me from Woolworth's.  Oh, and little cowboys, Indians and horses I would talk her into buying.  Is my age showing?

Back to Kate and her Dino Garden.  We put some pea-sized gravel in the bottom of the pot, added our potting soil and put the succulent in, then let Kate do her thing.

I also purchased a solar light at Dollar Tree--at first it was too tall for the size of the pot and then I thought, "Duh" and just removed the attached spike portion.  Perfect height!

Kate wanted to have the "plant eater" dinos munching on the succulent.  She decided the more carnivorous dinosaurs should be near each other.  Kate was pretty good at naming the dinosaurs; as much as dollar store dinosaurs look like authentic dinosaurs.

However, Kate then decided she wanted a "Dino-Fairy Garden" so out came the Fairy Garden items (resin tree, fairy, mushroom, picket fence).  Here is the finished product:

I didn't tell Kate what the velociraptor might do to the Fairy but I suppose the Fairy has fairy powers so all will be well.  Kate had a lot of fun doing this and, as you can see from her photo, is most proud of her creation.  When we took her home she showed it to her dad and Marissa (dad's girlfriend).

When I saw Kate's Dinosaur
Garden, it reminded me of the Crafty Lumberjack's Dinosaur Terrarium that I featured at Snickerdoodle Create Bake Make Link Party awhile back.  Check out their post (and awesome blog) here.

Thanks for stopping by!  Enjoy your day!
